This interesting formation is by the road going into Zion. You occasionally see these black stripes on rock formations. They are caused by iron oxide.
While there are many wonderful hikes you can take in Zion, the views from the road are breathtaking also. There are many places where you can stop for great views of the cliffs and the Virgin River, which runs through the park. There are several walks along the river that are quite level and wheelchair accessible.
