This paintbrush is growing directly out of the lichen covered rock in Zion National Park. May is a wonderful time for all kinds of wildflowers in Zion.

The sandstone cliffs are porous, with moisture moving down through the rock. Small cracks develop due to the changing weather. Wildflowers and other plants take advantage of these small niches and thrive in what appears to be solid rock.
